Natural Antibiotics - Pau d'Arco (Lapacho)

Pau d'Arco (Lapacho) - Natural Healing for a range of  viral infections including colds and the flu'

This highly effective herbal remedy is derived from the ancient civilization of the Incas. It has been used by many cultures over the centuries for a range of conditions. It comes from tree bark in the rain-forests of South America including the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba. The advantage of taking Pau d'Arco instead of antibiotics, is that it will not interfere with the natural healing processes (whereas antibiotics do). I have taken it for many years for a range of illnesses, sometimes combined with Echinacea. I use it as an anti-fungal or anti-viral; it is good for colds and flu and Candida. These are some of the vast range of conditions that respond to Pau d'arco:
  • antiviral - capable of destroying viruses
  • anti-fungalanti-inflammatory
  • anti-parasitic - Malaria
  • analgesic (pain killer)
  • sedative - helps with distress
  • decongestant - relieves congestion throughout the body
  • diuretic - an agent used to stimulate secretion and the flow of urine
  • hypotensive -  lowers blood pressure, used as a nerve relaxant, may induce sleep
  • Cancer - alleviates chemotherapy symptoms
  • tumours - has caused regression (shrinkage)
  • anti-bacterial for specific strains - Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Heliobacter Pylori ( stomach ulcer bug)
  • MRSA,  the infection that is a problem in many hospitals due to (and caused by)

These are the findings by South American doctors using the herb locally, and the research undertaken by Dr Daniel Mowry. For colds and flu I also take Vitamin C 1000mg or 1G, 3 times a day.

    Safety Precautions:
    1. Although no toxic effects have ever been noted, it should not be taken during pregnancy
    2. It should not be taken in combination with prescribed or OTC medications. It thins the blood, so may not be suitable for anyone with haemophilia, post-operative conditions, or may be counter-indicated with certain medications more information on this can be found on the pau d'arco websites at the base of this post
    3. Similarly with serious life-threatening illnesses such as Malaria, Leukaemia, large tumours, etc. it may not be wise to rely solely on this product
The advice of a physician would need to be sought in any of these above circumstances.

Pau d'Arco is packaged in many forms. It is worth purchasing quality products. Cheaper Pau d'arco can be of a lower quality, and be less pure.  Check that the contents are from the Tabebuia tree: the inner bark chips from this tree is the Pau d'arco, in tea form. However this form of 'tea' needs to be boiled for about 8 to 10 minutes, and half to a cupful of the inner bark. This tea is more powerful than the ready-made  liquid form. The liquid form and the capsules may be more convenient but weaker in their effectiveness.
